Plan of the Isthmus of Alexandria from Aboukir to Marabout

Manuscript map. Visual scale of 3 inches to 1 mile. True north and magnetic north arrows pointing down to the lower-left corner of the map. "Compiled at Alexandria under the direction of Major Bryce, Commanding Engineer. N.B. The Western Harbour having been found incorrectly laid down in the French Plan is here corrected." The names of officers responsible for map data complitation are given under the heading, "List of Authorities." This map and the other two manuscript maps of Alexandria in this collection were given to Robert Clifford by General John Graves Simcoe as mentioned on page 224 of the book, "John Graves Simcoe, 1752-1806: A Biography," by Mary Beacock Fryer and Christopher Dracott. Fryer and Dracott cite a letter from Clifford to Simcoe, dated June 1, 1801, in the Archives of Ontario, Simcoe series F47-3, microfilm reel 12, item 168, where Clifford "thanked him for sketches of Alexandria." This map was acquired by McMaster University in 1969 as part of the Lord Cholmondeley collection.
