This sheet depicts the dedication of the map to Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor (1765-1790), ruler of the Hapsburg monarchy and Austrian Empire, also known as "The Great Reformer." Cherubs engaged in the Arts and Sciences surround the scene. Joseph is surmounted by the imperial eagle. A military encampment is depicted in the background complete with tents, cavalry, and supply wagons. A Robert Clifford ownership label is affixed to the verso. It consists of the map title and a dedication to their imperial and royal majesties by the Count de Ferraris. It is surrounded by multiple cherubs holding the coat-of-arms of several cities of the Austrian Netherlands. Three visual scales are present [270 mm = 12,000 Toises or 6 Lieues communes de France]. Surrounding the scales are cherubs employed in various occupations. Inset map: "Plan topograhique de la ville de Bruxelles et de ses environs. Gravee par L.A. Dupuis." Numbers and alphabetical letters have been added to the margin of the map for reference. Includes place name index below the map entitled: Table des chefs-lieux de tous les arrondissemens communaux de la France, par ordre alphabétique. McMaster has another version of the map, which does not include the table of place names and bears a different margin design at the corner edges at the bottom of the map (see RMC_4199).
