Captain Weiss was the manager of the West Dome gold mine. When the fire overran the property he and the others retreated to the bottom of the 80 ft. mine shaft. The swirling firestorm passed over the shaft, sucking out all the oxygen and the occupants of the shaft were asphyxiated. Captain Weiss's wife and infant daughter were among the dead. There are various accounts of the exact number who died in the shaft ranging from 24 to 30. Back:
