Description
Front: I.Y. Hospital is in Deelfontein, South Africa (Imperial Yeomanry Hospital). The clothing of the recipient with the hat suggest the South African War (Second Boer War). Devonshire House in Piccadilly was the London residence of the Dukes of Devonshire in the 18th and 19th centuries. Residents at this time were the Cavendish family. Outdoor scene. The Queen is standing on a beautiful oriental carpet under a large garden umbrella. Some bits of indoor furniture behind her. Part of the facade of the house in background. People shown are the Queen's entourage: military officers, aristocracy, ladies-in-waiting, Queen's equerry(?). All clearly shown and PROBABLY IDENTIFIABLE. One man in civilian clothing, facing the Queen with back to camera, raising his hat with one hand and receiving something from the Queen's hand with the other hand. In the back ground other persons both military and civilian moving forward in a file. Another photo from this occasion (#11929): http://www.worldofstereoviews.com/londonvictoriapage1.htm Back:
