Description
Front: School children studying in the ward. National Archives (UK) estimate the photo to be between 1926 - 1955. The original house The Warren had been built in the 1870s and following various uses and a request from Great Ormond Street Hospital in London became, in 1930, a home for children who needed treatment following Rheumatic Heart Disease. During WWII the home was moved inland to Cuckfield due to Lancing's position close to the Channel and danger from bombs. In 1945 the children and staff returned to Lancing. In 1948 the Home was taken over by the Government following the new National Health Scheme finally closing 31 July 1955. Back: See Red & White
