Description
Front: A group of men posing at a worksite of a building that is being either demolished or renovated. I suspect renovated. The building they are working on has Walter Bros. written on the side of the building. They had a General store there circa 1911 according to the 1911 Ontario Gazeteer. Next door to the building being renovated is a building housing the Grocery store of Nicholas Krotz as per his name in the window. Above the Krotz store is the dentist office of T.J. McDowell. The sender of the card identifies several of the men in the photo. In looking at some of the local history on line as well as the 1911 Gazeteer the men that are that are referenced as "local celebrities" including W. Binning, a local architect; John McDonald listed as a grocer (on one history link there is mention of a McDonald owning an Emporium); C. Tabberner, a local insurance agent and J.W. Scott who is listed as a Banker in the 1910 -1911 Ontario Gazeteer, Listowel entry.. There are a couple of other names mentioned that are not fully legible nor listed in the limited Listowell histories I've scanned briefly. Back: Miss Mary M. Hacking Can you pick out some local celebrities? John McDonald on roof bossing the job. Binning, Ogden Tabberner[?] in group by tely pole. J.W. Scott under "cut price ad" and J.N. [...] behind bonnett of motor. This is one of Ree's cards showing the Mpl. before. Later on will send the "after".
