Printed map. Cartographer unknown. "Publish'd as the Act directs, June 28th, 1796, by the author no. 49 Great Portland Street." Hand coloured map, with text in English on left and right sides, and an index of departments below the map in French. France is depicted as the trunk, branches and leaves of an oak tree. The branches which reach into neighbouring countries represent rivers. Each leaf or part of the trunk represents a separate department in France. The text to the right and left of the map shows chronology of events in France between 1789 and 1795. Press marks indicate that the map and legend were printed separately from the text. 1 visual scale [42 mm = 25 Leagues of 2280 Toises 25 to a degree approximately]. This was originally the companion to another symbolic map where the Kingdom of France is represented as a ship.
