Lieutenant Colonel William Mudge was the first effective director of the British Ordnance Survey. In 1803, he set up a temporary survey headquarters in Chudleigh, the nearest town to Ugbrooke House, the ancestral home of Robert Clifford, so that he could call upon Clifford's expertise and advice on the creation of map sheets covering Devon.
