Plan of the Cities of London and Westminster, the borough of Southwark, and parts adjoining, shewing every house : [sheet 5]
Description
Printed map. "Published as the act directs by R. Horwood May 24 1799." [25.5 inches = 1 mile]. The original map was published on 32 sheets. McMaster's copy has been joined to form 8 sheets. Described in Felix Barker and Peter Jackson, The History of London in Maps. (London: Barrie & Jenkins, 1990) p.83: “The outcome of nine years work, every road and alley, garden and field was shown on a scale of 26 inches [not exactly accurate, but close] to the mile. As far as was possible every house was numbered. Ninety-four feet square [closer to 101 square feet by my calculation], this was the largest map ever printed in Britain.” Acquired as part of the Lord Cholmondely collection.
